Abingdon-on-Thames was occupied during the Iron Age. The abbey was founded in the seventh-century. A market was held in the town during the Middle Ages.

Sites of interest include Christ's Hospital of Abingdon, which was established in the 1550s. Abingdon Lock was built in 1790. Abingdon County Hall Museum is housed in a Grade I listed seventeenth-century County Hall building. Abingdon Bridge dates to the fifteenth-century.
