Southampton is the largest city in Hampshire, with a population of 236,900. The city is a major port and lies close to the New Forest.

Sites of interest in Southampton include the city walls, which include God's House Tower, which is a thirteenth-century gatehouse and is Grade I listed. Southampton's city walls are the longest surviving stretch of medieval walls in the country. The Bargate is a Grade I listed medieval gatehouse and scheduled monument. There are several museums in Southampton, including Tudor House and Garden, Southampton Maritime Museum and the SeaCity Museum. The Medieval Merchant's House dates from the thirteenth-century and is Grade I listed. Solent Sky is an aviation museum in the city and focuses on Southampton's history of aviation.

Other cultural attractions include the Mayflower Theatre, which is Grade II listed and has a capacity of 2,300. Southampton City Art Gallery, which opened in 1939, is located in the Civic Centre. Southampton Guildhall is a multipurpose venue and is a Grade II* listed building. A wide range of bands and singers have performed at the Guildhall, including Amy Winehouse, Pink Floyd, David Bowie and the Kaiser Chiefs. Other smaller music venues in the city include the Joiners Arms, the Engine Rooms and The Talking Heads. Westquay is a shopping centre in Southampton, and contains 130 shops.

There are facilities in Southampton for sports including football, cricket, hockey, water sports and rugby. Southampton F.C. play their home games at St Mary's Stadium, which has a capacity of 32,384. Southampton Old Bowling Green is the oldest surviving bowling green in the world, having been first used in 1299.

Southampton has a large number of primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges that provide further education including Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, Itchen Sixth Form College and City College Southampton. There are two universities in the city: the University of Southampton and Solent University. The University of Southampton is regularly ranked in the top 20 of UK universities. Solent University gained university status in 2004 and has an enrolment of 11,060 students.

Southampton Central railway station offers services to destinations including London, Basingstoke, Portsmouth, Cardiff, Salisbury, Weymouth, Bournemouth and Manchester. Southampton Airport Parkway railway station is located in the south of Eastleigh and is adjacent to Southampton Airport. There are also railway stations in the suburbs of Southampton, including St Denys, Swaythling, Redbridge and Millbrook. There are bus services in operation in the city. Southampton Airport provides flights to locations such as Spain, Switzerland, France, Italy and Portugal.
