Reading is the county town of Berkshire and is situated 40 miles west of London. It lies on the River Kennet and has a population of 163,100, although the urban area around Reading has an estimated population of 318,014. The current average sale price in Reading is £573,288. Suburbs of Reading include Whitley Wood, Lower Earley, Woodley and Tilehurst.

Reading is first mentioned in the eighth-century, and a battle fought against the Danes took place in the town in 871. In 1121, Reading Abbey was founded by Henry I, and the ruins can still be visited today. The Siege of Reading took place in 1642-3 during the English Civil War. The town became a major manufacturing centre during the Victorian era.

Reading is home to the Oracle, which is a large shopping centre and contains 90 shops, as well as restaurants, bars and cafes. The Oracle also includes a Vue cinema. Broad Street is the main high street in Reading. Other shopping centres include the Bristol and West Arcade, Harris Arcade and The Walk. A street market is held in Hosier Street. Other sites of interest in Reading include Reading Town Hall, The Hexagon and the Progress Theatre. Forbury Gardens is a public park in the town, while Prospect Park is the largest public park in Reading. Reading Minster is a medieval church that may have been founded as early as the seventh-century. Reading Museum was established in 1883. Other museums in the town include the Museum of English Rural Life, the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology and the Cole Museum of Zoology.

Reading Festival has run since 1971 and has hosted singers and bands including The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Nirvana, Eminem, Muse, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Oasis and Green Day, among others. It takes place in August every year. Reading Beer Festival is held in May, while Reading Pride is an annual event that takes place in Kings Meadow.

The University of Reading is home to over 15,000 students. Established in 1125, Reading School is one of the oldest schools in England. There are a variety of primary and secondary schools in the town. Reading College offers a variety of further education courses.

The Majedski Stadium is home to Reading F.C. and has a seating capacity of 24,161. There are a variety of sports clubs and teams in Reading, as well as facilities, for sports including rugby, basketball, rowing, hockey and athletics.

Reading railway station is one of the busiest stations in the United Kingdom and offers services to a variety of destinations including London, Oxford, Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Basingstoke, Southampton, Winchester and Bournemouth. Reading West railway station is located 1 mile west of the town. Reading Buses offers services to towns including Newbury, Bracknell and Slough, and there are also other bus operators in Reading. London Heathrow Airport is situated 25 miles from Reading.
