Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire, with a population of 225,700. It lies on the River Nene.

Northampton was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Landmarks in the town include Northampton Guildhall, which was constructed between 1861 and 1864 and is Grade II* listed. All Saints' Church is Grade I listed. Delapré Abbey is a neoclassical mansion that can trace its origins to the twelfth-century. It is located one mile from Northampton. Northampton Castle was built during the eleventh-century; all that remains today is the Postern Gate. Sessions House is Grade I listed and was constructed between 1676 and 1678. The Holy Sepulchre is the oldest building in Northampton; it is Grade I listed and dates from c. 1100. Northampton Cathedral was consecrated in 1864 and is the seat of the Bishop of Northampton.

Other attractions in the town include the market square, which is one of the largest in the United Kingdom and dates to 1235. The Grosvenor Centre is a shopping centre that opened in 1976. Billing Aquadrome is a leisure park that hosts music events and car shows. The Deco is a Grade II listed building that has a 900-seat auditorium and is employed as a theatre and cinema. Royal & Derngate is a theatre complex consisting of the Royal Theatre and the Derngate Theatre. Northamptonshire Central Library is a Grade II listed building erected in 1910, while Northampton Museum and Art Gallery claims to house the world's largest collection of shoes (over 12,000 pairs).

The town has facilities for sports such as rugby, football, cricket and golf. Northampton Town F.C. play their home games at Sixfields Stadium, which has a capacity of 7,798. Northampton Saints play their home games at Franklin's Gardens, which has a capacity of 15,249.

The first University of Northampton was established in 1261 by royal charter by Henry III; it was dissolved in 1265. The current University of Northampton gained university status in 2005 and has 12,850 students. The town has numerous primary and secondary schools, while Northampton College provides further education.

Northampton railway station offers services to destinations including London, Birmingham, Crewe and Nuneaton. North Gate bus station provides bus services to locations such as Corby, Daventry and Kettering.
