The home of William Golding, Marlborough is a market town on the River Kennet in Wiltshire, with a population of 8,395. The high street in Marlborough is the second-widest in the United Kingdom, after Stockton-On-Tees. Marlborough is situated 24 miles north of Salisbury and lies close to Savernake Forest.

Several kings spent time at the castle, including Henry II, John and Henry III. The castle was later owned by the Seymour family. The town's charter was granted in 1204.
