Swansea is a coastal city in Wales and has a population of 245,500. It is the second-largest city in Wales.

Swansea was granted its first charter in the twelfth-century. The city was the world's leading centre for the copper-smelting industry during the Industrial Revolution. Sites of interest include the ruins of Swansea Castle, which was founded in 1107. The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is the city's public art gallery and was established in 1911. Swansea Museum is the oldest museum in Wales; the building was constructed in 1841. Swansea Grand Theatre opened in 1897 and has a capacity of 1,000. The theatre hosts pantomimes and plays. The Palace Theatre is Grade II listed and opened in 1888. Brangwyn Hall is a concert venue in the city.

Other attractions include the Dylan Thomas Centre, which hosts a programme of literary events and has a permanent exhibition on the life and work of Dylan Thomas. Swansea Market is the largest indoor market in Wales. The Quadrant Shopping Centre opened in 1979 and is adjacent to Swansea Market.

There are facilities for sports including rugby, cricket and football. Swansea City A.F.C. play their home games at Liberty Stadium, which has a capacity of 21,088. Other sports grounds in Swansea include St. Helen's Rugby and Cricket Ground and Swansea Indoor Bowls Stadium.

Swansea has several primary and secondary schools, including Bishop Gore School, which was founded in 1682. There are also establishments for further and higher education, including Gower College Swansea. The city is also home to Swansea University, which can trace its origins to 1920 and has an enrolment of 20,831 students.

Swansea railway station offers services to destinations including Manchester, Carmarthen, London, Cardiff, Shrewsbury and Bristol. There are bus services in operation in the town.
