Monmouth is the county town of Monmouthshire, with a population of 10,508. The town lies close to the border with England. Monmouth is situated 30 miles northeast of Cardiff.

Sites of interest include Monmouth Castle, which is Grade I listed and was constructed during the eleventh-century. Monnow Bridge is Grade I listed and was built during the thirteenth-century. The bridge crosses the River Monnow. The Shire Hall was constructed in 1724 and is Grade I listed. Great Castle House was built in 1673 and is the headquarters of Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers.

Monnow Street is the main shopping street of the town and runs for 500 yards. There are shops, banks, pubs, restaurants and cafes in the town. Old Nag's Head is a nineteenth-century public house and is Grade II* listed, while Queens Head is Grade II listed. The Griffin is a public house that dates to the eighteenth-century. Savoy Theatre opened in 1928 and has a capacity of 360. The Market Hall opened in 1840. Monmouth has several museums, including Monmouth Museum and Monmouth Regimental Museum.

Monmouth has several churches, including St Mary's Priory Church, which dates from the eighteenth- and nineteenth-centuries and is Grade II* listed. The Church of St Thomas the Martyr has features dating to the twelfth-century.

Monmouth has several primary and secondary schools. Monmouth School is an independent boys' boarding school in the town, and was founded in 1614. Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls was established in 1892. There are facilities for sports including football, golf, cricket, bowls and rugby. Monmouth Town F.C. play their home games at Chippenham Sports Ground, which has a capacity of 300.

There is no railway station in Monmouth. There are bus services in operation in the town.
