Portsmouth is a port city in the south of Hampshire, with a population of 205,100. The current average sale price in Portsmouth is £241,663. It is the only island city in the United Kingdom, situated mainly on Portsea Island, to the south of which lies the seaside resort of Southsea. Portsmouth is also the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom.

Portsmouth is a historic city, with its history dating to the Roman period. It was a significant naval port for hundreds of years. It was described as being 'the world's greatest naval port'. Portsmouth is viewed as the home of the Royal Navy and is home to several famous shops, including the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory (which was owned by Horatio Nelson). Portsmouth Naval Yard is situated on the eastern shore of Portsmouth Harbour, and hosts a number of maritime attractions including the Mary Rose, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior.

Sites of interest in Portsmouth include the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, the Spinnaker Tower - which is one of the tallest structures in the United Kingdom - and Fratton Park, home to Portsmouth F.C. and which has a seating capacity of 20,620. Historic landmarks include Fort Nelson, Southsea Castle (built in the reign of Henry VIII) and the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum. Other museums include the Royal Marines Museum and the National Museum of the Royal Navy. There are two cathedrals in the city: the Anglican Cathedral of St Thomas and the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist.

Portsmouth is also known for its docks, the first of which were built in 1212. The first permanent fortifications were built during the fifteenth-century. The Round Tower, which is a Grade I listed building, was constructed in 1418 in wood and in stone later in the fifteenth-century. During the English Civil War, Portsmouth was a base for the Parliamentarian army and the Siege of Portsmouth took place in 1642. When the monarchy was restored, Charles II married Catherine of Braganza in Portsmouth. Portsmouth became a city in 1926, and it was bombed heavily during World War Two.

There are several theatres in and around the city, including the New Theatre Royal and the Kings Theatre. Music venues include The Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth Guildhall (which has a seating capacity of 2500), and Portsmouth Pyramids Centre. Gunwharf Quays holds 90 shops and 30 cafes, pubs and restaurants. Portsmouth is also home to a variety of pubs, bars and nightclubs. There are sporting facilities for sports including hockey, cricket, football and golf.

Portsmouth is home to several schools, including Portsmouth Grammar School (founded in 1732); independent schools include Portsmouth High School, Mayville High School and St John's College. The University of Portsmouth was founded in 1992 and has over 22,000 students.

There are several railway stations in Portsmouth, including Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour. Services are offered to a range of destinations including London, Southampton, Guildford, Bath, Bristol, Salisbury, Brighton and Cardiff. Portsmouth Harbour offers ferry services to Gosport and the Isle of Wight.
