Landmarks in the town include Neath Castle, which was constructed between 1114 and 1130. It is a Grade II* listed building. The church of St Illtyd dates from the Norman period. The ruins of Neath Abbey can be seen today. Formerly the largest abbey in Wales, it was established in 1129 and was dissolved in 1539.
